The House That Jack Built

A 2018 psychological horror art film directed by Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier. The plot follows Jack (Matt Dillon), a serial killer who, over a 12-year period from the late 1970s into the 1980s, commits numerous murders in the state of Washington, USA. The film is structured as a series of flashback vignettes, where Jack recounts his crimes to the Roman poet Virgil (Bruno Ganz), attempting to justify his actions. In the first of five presented "incidents," Jack murders a woman (Uma Thurman) whose car has broken down on the road. In the second incident, he poses as an insurance agent, gains the trust of a widow (Siobhan Fallon Hogan), and kills her. In the third incident, Jack enters into a relationship with a woman named Jacqueline (Riley Keough), whom he calls "Simple," and eventually kills her. The fourth incident shows Jack abducting two children of a woman (Sofie Gråbøl), killing them during a picnic, and then returning to kill the woman herself. In the fifth incident, Jack plans to kill several people simultaneously in a walk-in freezer, but his plans are disrupted by the police. In the film's finale, Virgil guides Jack through hell, using Dante's "Divine Comedy" as a metatext.
