A 2019 American psychological horror film directed by Robert Eggers, who also co-wrote the screenplay with his brother Max Eggers. Set in the late 19th century on a remote New England island, the story follows two lighthouse keepers: the experienced Thomas Wake (Willem Dafoe) and his new assistant Ephraim Winslow (Robert Pattinson), assigned to a four-week shift. Wake is a stern and domineering senior keeper who insists on strict adherence to rules and forbids Winslow from accessing the lighthouse's lantern. Winslow, a former lumberjack with a mysterious past, undertakes grueling tasks and begins experiencing strange visions, including images of mermaids and mysterious creatures. Isolation, harsh weather conditions, and escalating tensions between the men lead to growing madness. When a storm prolongs their stay, supplies dwindle, and they descend into alcoholism and paranoia. The film explores themes of solitude, power, guilt, and the human psyche, immersing the viewer in an atmosphere of horror and mysticism.
