The Illusionist

A 2006 drama film directed by Neil Burger, based on Steven Millhauser’s short story "Eisenheim the Illusionist." Set in early 20th century Vienna, the film follows a talented magician, Eisenheim (Edward Norton), who mesmerizes audiences with his incredible illusions. Among the spectators is Crown Prince Leopold (Rufus Sewell) and his fiancée, Duchess Sophie (Jessica Biel). Eisenheim soon realizes Sophie is his long-lost childhood love, whom he was separated from due to their social differences. Their rekindled romance enrages Leopold, who orders Chief Inspector Uhl (Paul Giamatti) to expose Eisenheim as a fraud. Soon, Sophie is found dead, and Eisenheim begins performing eerie séances, summoning spirits from the beyond. As authorities attempt to capture him, it is revealed that everything was part of an elaborate plan.
