The Order

The 2003 American-German mystical thriller directed by Brian Helgeland follows young priest Alex Bernier (Heath Ledger), a member of the fictional Carolingian Order specializing in exorcisms and combating demonic forces. After the mysterious death of his mentor, Father Dominic, in Rome, Alex travels to investigate the circumstances surrounding his demise. He is joined by artist Mara Williams (Shannyn Sossamon), with whom he shares a complicated history, as he previously attempted an exorcism on her. In Rome, Alex discovers that Dominic's death is linked to the activities of a "sin-eater" — a mysterious figure capable of absolving sins outside the Church's authority. During his investigation, Alex encounters William Eden (Benno Fürmann), an immortal sin-eater seeking to pass on his abilities to Alex. Initially refusing the role, Alex desires a normal life with Mara. However, Eden wounds Mara, making it appear as a suicide attempt, prompting Alex to perform the sin-eating ritual to save her soul, thereby assuming the role of the new sin-eater. It is revealed that Cardinal Driscoll (Peter Weller) orchestrated events to manipulate Alex for his own ambitions. In the climax, Alex exposes Driscoll's schemes and chooses to use his new powers to aid the worthy, denying absolution to the unrepentant.
