The Insider

Michael Mann directed this 1999 American biographical drama and wrote the screenplay with Eric Roth, working from "The Man Who Knew Too Much," a 1996 Vanity Fair article by Marie Brenner. At its center is Jeffrey Wigand (Russell Crowe), who had been a vice president at the tobacco company Brown & Williamson, in charge of research and development. He turns whistleblower and reveals that his employer deliberately manipulated the makeup of cigarettes to make them more addictive. "60 Minutes" producer Lowell Bergman (Al Pacino) convinces Wigand to give an interview for the program despite pressure and threats from his former employer and legal obstacles. Throughout the preparation and aftermath of the interview, Wigand faces personal and professional challenges, including lawsuits, threats to his family, and attempts to discredit his reputation. The film provides a detailed depiction of the inner workings of investigative journalism, the ethical dilemmas faced by the media, and the influence of corporate interests on freedom of speech. Supporting characters include Mike Wallace (Christopher Plummer), the host of "60 Minutes," and Don Hewitt (Philip Baker Hall), the executive producer of the program, who become involved in the conflict between journalistic ethics and CBS's corporate interests. The film received critical acclaim for its direction, screenplay, and especially for Russell Crowe's performance, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. Despite its critical success, the film did not recoup its budget at the box office, grossing approximately $60 million against a budget of $68 to $90 million. Nevertheless, "The Insider" is considered one of the best films about investigative journalism and whistleblowers, raising important questions about freedom of speech, corporate responsibility, and journalistic ethics.
