David Locke (Jack Nicholson), a disillusioned American journalist, travels to Chad to cover a civil war but faces difficulties in finding interviewees and loses his guides in the desert. Returning to his hotel, he discovers that his acquaintance, an Englishman named Robertson, has died of a heart attack. Deciding to start anew, Locke assumes Robertson's identity, unaware that he was an arms dealer connected to rebels. As Locke travels through Europe, he encounters dangers linked to Robertson's past and forms a relationship with a young woman (Maria Schneider) who aids him in evading capture. The film delves into themes of identity, alienation, and the desire to escape oneself, highlighting the protagonist's internal struggle between the pursuit of freedom and the inevitability of consequences stemming from his choices.
