A 2001 American mystery crime drama film directed by Sean Penn and based on Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s novella The Pledge: Requiem for the Detective Novel. The story centers on Jerry Black (Jack Nicholson), a retiring Nevada police detective who becomes obsessed with solving the brutal rape and murder of a young girl. Despite a confession from a mentally impaired Native American suspect who later commits suicide, Jerry believes the real killer is still at large. He buys a gas station in a remote area to stay close to where he thinks the killer may strike again and enters a relationship with a woman named Lori (Robin Wright), becoming a surrogate father to her daughter. Jerry eventually begins using the girl as bait in his unrelenting search for justice, but his fixation leads to the disintegration of his life and sanity. The film ends ambiguously, leaving it unclear whether Jerry was right or simply delusional. The movie explores themes of obsession, justice, sacrifice, and psychological deterioration, known for its somber tone and powerful performance by Nicholson.
