The 2002 American crime drama directed by Nick Cassavetes and written by James Kearns centers on John Quincy Archibald (Denzel Washington), a factory worker in Chicago whose life is turned upside down when his son Michael (Daniel E. Smith) collapses during a baseball game. At the hospital, doctors reveal that Michael has an enlarged heart and requires an immediate transplant costing $250,000. However, the family's insurance refuses to cover the expenses, and the hospital demands a $75,000 down payment to place Michael on the transplant list. Desperate and out of options, John takes the emergency room staff and patients hostage, insisting that his son be added to the transplant list. The standoff draws the attention of law enforcement, with Lieutenant Frank Grimes (Robert Duvall) leading the negotiations. The film also features performances by James Woods (Dr. Raymond Turner), Anne Heche (Rebecca Payne), Kimberly Elise (Denise Archibald), Shawn Hatosy, Ray Liotta, and Eddie Griffin. Despite receiving negative reviews from critics, the film was a commercial success, grossing over $102 million worldwide against a $36 million budget.
