The 2002 American spy thriller directed by Phil Alden Robinson, based on Tom Clancy's novel, features Ben Affleck as a young CIA analyst Jack Ryan. The plot begins with the discovery of an Israeli nuclear bomb lost during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, which decades later falls into the hands of Austrian neo-Nazi Richard Dressler (Alan Bates). Dressler's aim is to incite a nuclear war between the U.S. and Russia to establish fascist dominance in Europe. In 2002, following the death of the Russian president, new leader Alexander Nemerov (Ciarán Hinds) raises suspicions in the U.S. Analyst Jack Ryan and CIA Director William Cabot (Morgan Freeman) visit Russia to assess nuclear facilities and notice the absence of three scientists. Operative John Clark (Liev Schreiber) discovers the scientists are building a nuclear bomb for Dressler. The bomb is transported to Baltimore and detonated during a football game, killing thousands and injuring Cabot. The U.S. suspects Russia, especially after a Russian general attacks a U.S. aircraft carrier. Ryan uncovers that the bomb was made in the U.S., indicating a provocation. He contacts Nemerov and convinces him to stand down, averting nuclear war. The perpetrators, including Dressler, are eliminated, and the U.S. and Russian presidents announce joint measures to combat nuclear proliferation. The film explores themes of international tension, misinformation, and the importance of diplomacy in preventing global catastrophes.
