The Voice of Hind Rajab

A 2025 drama written and directed by the Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania. Its material is a set of genuine audio recordings of a telephone call, kept by the humanitarian service that took emergency calls. The recordings belong to a call made by a six-year-old girl from the Gaza Strip who was trapped in a car under fire: the dispatchers who took the call kept the line open with her while trying to get help dispatched. The staging rests on a division of two planes: the real recording is heard from the screen as it is, without redubbing and without actorly imitation, while the work of the call centre is recreated as fiction, in a built set, with actors as the operators and coordinators. The child's voice stays real and everything rests on it; around it play adults who cannot reach her in time. This arrangement places the film in the ground between documentary and fiction, where the sound remains documentary and the image belongs entirely to the staging. The method continues the line of the director's earlier work, The Man Who Sold His Skin and Four Daughters, in which documentary material and reconstruction were likewise brought inside a single piece. Amer Hlehel, Clara Khoury, Motaz Malhees and Saja Kilani take the leading parts. Film4 Productions and Sunnyland Film produced, with Nadim Cheikhrouha, Odessa Rae and James Wilson as producers. The picture was shown at a festival on 3 September 2025, with a further screening on 10 September. It opened in cinemas on 26 November 2025 and reached other territories on 22 January 2026. The response was powerful: the festival screening drew a standing ovation of more than twenty minutes, the film took the second most important prize there, and it went on to collect the season's major international nominations.
