Nuremberg

A 2025 drama directed by James Vanderbilt, who also wrote the screenplay and produced. At its base is the Nuremberg trial, the court that judged the leaders of Nazi Germany in 1945 and 1946: it fixed individual responsibility for crimes against humanity in international law and became the model for the tribunals that followed. The film looks not at the courtroom but at the man seated beside the defendants: Douglas Kelley, a United States Army psychiatrist, was answerable for the condition of the high-ranking prisoners awaiting the start of the proceedings. For months he observed them, ran examinations and held long conversations, trying to establish whether these men shared any psychiatric traits at all, or whether there was nothing remarkable in them, which is the hardest of the available conclusions. His meetings with Hermann Goering became the best known of them. Rami Malek and Russell Crowe take the leading parts as the psychiatrist and his interlocutor among the accused. The source is the documentary book The Nazi and the Psychiatrist by the American journalist Jack El-Hai. Michael Shannon, Richard E. Grant, Leo Woodall, John Slattery, Wrenn Schmidt, Lotte Verbeek, Andreas Pietschmann, Colin Hanks and Mark O'Brien also appear. Vanderbilt is known above all as a screenwriter, having written Zodiac for David Fincher, and his directing credits are few. The score is by Brian Tyler. The picture was shown at a film festival on 7 September 2025 and opened in cinemas on 7 November that year, reaching other territories in December 2025 and January 2026. Reception was largely favourable: reviewers praised the work of Rami Malek and Russell Crowe while faulting the film for its liberties with history and for its sagging pace. Audience scores came out well above the critical ones, and the picture took more at the box office than it cost.
