To Die For

The 1995 American satirical black comedy directed by Gus Van Sant, with a screenplay by Buck Henry based on Joyce Maynard's novel, follows Suzanne Stone-Maretto (Nicole Kidman), an ambitious and narcissistic woman from a small town in New Hampshire who dreams of becoming a national television anchor. Working as a weather reporter at a local cable station, she perceives her husband Larry Maretto (Matt Dillon) as an obstacle to her aspirations. Suzanne seduces teenager Jimmy Emmett (Joaquin Phoenix) and convinces him to murder Larry, manipulating his emotions and portraying her husband as abusive. In the final scene, Larry's sister, Janice Maretto (Illeana Douglas), is seen ice-skating on the lake, symbolically "dancing" on Suzanne's grave.
