Tom and Jerry: Blast Off to Mars

The 2005 American animated science fiction comedy-adventure film, directed by Bill Kopp, serves as the second direct-to-video feature starring Tom and Jerry. The story begins with the usual chase of Tom Cat after Jerry Mouse, leading them to the "International Space Place" space center. At this time, astronauts Buzz Blister (Jess Harnell) and Biff Buzzard (Billy West) are preparing for a mission to Mars. Through a series of misunderstandings, Tom is mistaken for an alien due to accidentally being covered in green paint and is pursued by the staff but manages to escape. Jerry, hiding from Tom, inadvertently triggers the dehydration food process, causing chaos at the base. Realizing that only Tom can catch Jerry, the staff brings him back and assigns him the task of eliminating the mouse. During the chase, both accidentally end up aboard a rocket and are launched to Mars. Upon arrival on the Red Planet, they encounter a green alien named Peep (Kathryn Fiore) and her pet dog Ubu (Frank Welker). Jerry is mistaken for the Great Gloop, a mythical savior of the Martians, and becomes an object of worship. However, when the deception is revealed, Tom, Jerry, and Peep decide to return to Earth to warn humanity of the impending Martian invasion. They hijack a flying saucer and head home. On Earth, they confront a giant vacuum robot called the "Invince-a-tron," created by the Martians to destroy the planet. With the help of Spike (Frank Welker), a bulldog whom they lure inside the robot, they manage to cause a malfunction, leading to its destruction. In gratitude for saving the planet, the President of the United States awards Tom and Jerry a new car. However, their joy is short-lived as Spike, controlling a rebuilt "Invince-a-tron," begins chasing them, seeking revenge for his destroyed bone. The film was released on DVD and VHS on January 18, 2005, and later on Blu-ray on October 16, 2012. It marks Joseph Barbera's first work on Tom and Jerry without his partner William Hanna, who passed away in 2001. The film received mixed reviews from critics; some noted its deviation from the spirit of the original shorts, while others praised the attempt to rejuvenate the franchise.​
