Triangle of Sadness

The 2022 satirical drama, co-produced by Sweden, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, explores themes of class inequality, social norms, and human nature. The story follows young model-influencer couple Carl (Harris Dickinson) and Yaya (Charlbi Dean), who receive an invitation to a luxury cruise alongside members of the global elite, including Russian oligarch Dimitry (Zlatko Burić), an elderly British arms-dealing couple, and other eccentric passengers. The ship is captained by an unstable, Marxist-leaning commander (Woody Harrelson) who despises his wealthy guests. During a lavish dinner, a violent storm leads to chaos, and soon after, the yacht is attacked by pirates, stranding a group of survivors on a deserted island. In this new setting, social roles are turned upside down: former toilet cleaner Abigail (Dolly De Leon), possessing survival skills, seizes power, forcing the former elite to submit to her rule in exchange for food and protection. The film satirizes modern social hierarchies, demonstrating how wealth and privilege become meaningless in extreme circumstances. It won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and received Academy Award nominations.
