An American science fiction television series by Irwin Allen, which ABC carried for four years — from its first episode on September 14, 1964 until the last on March 31, 1968. The story centers on the adventures of the futuristic nuclear submarine SSRN Seaview, designed by Admiral Harriman Nelson (Richard Basehart) and commanded by Captain Lee Crane (David Hedison). Initially, the series explored Cold War themes, espionage, and scientific discoveries, but over time shifted towards fantastical plots involving sea monsters, aliens, and paranormal phenomena. It was the first of Allen's four science fiction television series and the longest-running, comprising 110 episodes over four seasons, with 32 episodes filmed in black and white and 78 in color. The production utilized sets and models from the 1961 film of the same name. The series had a significant impact on the science fiction genre on television, becoming a cult classic due to its unique atmosphere and innovative approach to underwater adventures.
