Wives and Daughters

The 1999 British television miniseries, directed by Nicholas Renton and written by Andrew Davies, is based on the unfinished novel "Wives and Daughters" by Victorian author Elizabeth Gaskell. Set in early 19th-century England, the story follows Molly Gibson (Justine Waddell), the daughter of a provincial doctor (Bill Paterson), whose quiet life is disrupted when her widowed father remarries the vain and superficial Hyacinth Kirkpatrick (Francesca Annis), a former governess. Along with her new stepmother comes Cynthia (Keeley Hawes), a beautiful and flirtatious young woman who initially befriends Molly but soon becomes her rival for the affections of Roger Hamley (Anthony Howell), the younger son of the local squire (Michael Gambon). The series delves into themes of class distinctions, familial duty, friendship, and love, highlighting how societal expectations influence personal choices. The cast also includes Tom Hollander (Osborne Hamley), Iain Glen (Mr. Preston), Penelope Wilton (Mrs. Hamley), Rosamund Pike (Lady Harriet Cumnor), among others. The miniseries comprises four episodes with a total runtime of approximately 301 minutes and was a co-production between the BBC and WGBH Boston. It garnered high ratings and critical acclaim, with Michael Gambon receiving a BAFTA award for Best Actor.
