Wood carving

The practice of artistic and utilitarian wood processing by carving shapes, patterns, and images, which has a millennia-long history and encompasses a wide range of directions—from monumental sculpture to miniature decorative works. The earliest archaeological evidence of wood carving dates back to the Neolithic era, with significant development seen in Ancient Egypt, China, India, and Scandinavia. In various cultures, carving was used to create ritualistic and religious objects as well as to embellish everyday items—furniture, dishes, doors, and temples. During the Middle Ages in Europe, guilds of master carvers formed, and the practice gained prestige, especially in church architecture and iconography. Over time, different styles and schools emerged: Russian folk carving with characteristic geometric patterns, Gothic and Baroque carving in Western Europe, and Japanese and Chinese carving with delicate narrative compositions. Modern wood carving includes both hand tools like chisels and knives and power tools such as chainsaws, which are used to produce large outdoor sculptures. Artistic interior design, carved paintings, furniture, and decorative items are also active genres. This practice demands a high level of skill, knowledge of wood species, artistic vision, and technical expertise, remaining an essential part of both craftsmanship and the visual arts.
