The 2007 American fantasy drama directed by Francis Ford Coppola, based on the novella by Romanian author Mircea Eliade, tells the story of Dominic Matei (Tim Roth), a 70-year-old Romanian linguistics professor who, in 1938, despondent over his unfulfilled research into the origins of language and contemplating suicide, is struck by lightning, resulting in his rejuvenation to a 40-year-old man endowed with extraordinary abilities, including accelerated cognition, telepathy, and fluency in ancient languages, which draws the attention of Nazi agents, forcing him to flee to Switzerland, where he meets Veronica (Alexandra Maria Lara), a woman resembling his lost love Laura, and after she is also struck by lightning, she begins speaking ancient languages, including Sanskrit, aiding Dominic's research, but their relationship becomes complicated when Dominic realizes his presence accelerates Veronica's aging, leading him to leave her for her own well-being, returning to his hometown, where he confronts his "Other"—a metaphysical double symbolizing humanity's evolution—and ultimately dies, holding a third rose in his hand, symbolizing the completion of his spiritual journey; the film explores themes of time, consciousness, reincarnation, and human identity, blending philosophical inquiry with elements of mysticism and drama.
