13 Ghosts

A 1960 American supernatural horror film, directed and produced by William Castle, tells the story of the impoverished Zorba family, who unexpectedly inherit an old mansion from their enigmatic uncle, Dr. Plato Zorba. The family consists of father Professor Cyrus Zorba (Donald Woods), his wife Hilda (Rosemary DeCamp), teenage daughter Medea (Jo Morrow), and young son Buck (Charles Herbert). Upon moving into their new home, they discover that the mansion is inhabited by twelve ghosts collected by Dr. Zorba from around the world. These spirits include a wailing lady, a fiery skeleton, an Italian chef perpetually murdering his wife and her lover, a hanging lady, an executioner holding a severed head, a full-grown lion with its headless tamer, among others. Each ghost has a unique backstory and presence within the house. Dr. Zorba left behind special goggles that allow the wearer to see these ghosts, adding an interactive element for the characters. The family also encounters the eerie housekeeper, Elaine (Margaret Hamilton), whose behavior raises suspicions. It soon becomes apparent that a fortune is hidden within the house, and the family's lawyer, Benjamin Rush (Martin Milner), is determined to find it, even resorting to attempting to kill Buck using a canopy bed mechanism. However, Dr. Zorba's ghost intervenes, saving Buck and leading to Rush's demise, who then becomes the thirteenth ghost. In the end, the family decides to remain in the house despite its haunted history, hoping for a brighter future without the ghosts. The film is notable for its use of the "Illusion-O" effect, allowing audiences to see the ghosts through special viewers, a groundbreaking technique at the time. In 2001, a remake titled "Thirteen Ghosts," directed by Steve Beck, was released, reimagining the original plot with modern special effects and alterations to the storyline.
