An American independent gothic horror film from 1963, directed in the USA by Roger Corman, Francis Ford Coppola, Dennis Jakob, Monte Hellman, Jack Hill, and Jack Nicholson. The story is set in 1806 and follows French officer André Duvalier (Jack Nicholson), who becomes lost and finds himself near the castle of Baron von Leppe (Boris Karloff). There, he encounters a mysterious woman named Helene (Sandra Knight), who bears a striking resemblance to the Baron's deceased wife, who died twenty years prior. André seeks to uncover the truth about Helene and learns that the Baron is actually Eric, a man who killed the real Baron and his wife, then assumed his identity. Eric is haunted by guilt and visions conjured by the witch Katrina (Dorothy Neumann), Eric's mother, who seeks revenge for her son's death. In the climax, the castle collapses, Eric dies, and Helene transforms into a decaying corpse. The film is noted for its chaotic production history, including shooting Karloff's scenes in two days and involving several future notable filmmakers. Although not directly based on Edgar Allan Poe's works, the film is often associated with the cycle of adaptations of his stories.
