The 1996 American drama directed by Richard Pearce, written by Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Epperson, centers on Earl Pilcher Jr. (Robert Duvall), who runs an equipment rental business in a small Arkansas town. After his mother's death, Earl receives a letter revealing that his biological mother was an African-American woman named Willa Mae, who died during childbirth after being raped by Earl's white father. The letter urges Earl to seek out his half-brother, Ray Murdock (James Earl Jones), living in Chicago. Earl travels to Chicago and meets Ray, who is initially hostile due to the painful history involving their father and the loss of his mother. Following an incident where Earl is assaulted and hospitalized, Ray reluctantly brings him home, where Earl meets Aunt T. (Irma P. Hall), Ray's blind and kind-hearted aunt, who immediately recognizes Earl as family. Despite tensions, including conflicts with Ray's son Virgil (Michael Beach), who disapproves of Earl's presence, the brothers begin to confront their shared past and develop a bond. The film delves into themes of racial prejudice, family connections, and forgiveness, illustrating how the characters navigate their differences to find common ground.
