A Family Thing

The 1996 American drama directed by Richard Pearce, written by Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Epperson, centers on Earl Pilcher Jr. (Robert Duvall), who runs an equipment rental business in a small Arkansas town. After his mother's death, Earl receives a letter revealing that his biological mother was an African-American woman named Willa Mae, who died during childbirth after being raped by Earl's white father.
