The 2010 Canadian comedy-drama directed by Richard J. Lewis, based on the 1997 novel by Mordecai Richler and scripted by Michael Konyves, chronicles the life of Barney Panofsky (Paul Giamatti), a television producer reflecting on his tumultuous past. Spanning four decades and two countries, the narrative begins with Barney's bohemian youth in Rome, where he marries the eccentric artist Clara (Rachelle Lefevre), whose tragic death leaves a lasting impact. His second marriage to an unnamed woman (Minnie Driver), a member of the upper class, proves unsuccessful. During their wedding reception, Barney meets Miriam (Rosamund Pike), whom he believes to be his true love. Their relationship blossoms despite obstacles, and Miriam becomes his third wife and the mother of his children. Barney's father, Izzy Panofsky (Dustin Hoffman), a former police officer, plays a significant role in his life, offering guidance and support. The film also delves into the mysterious disappearance of Barney's best friend, Boogie (Scott Speedman), leading to suspicions of murder. As the story unfolds, Barney grapples with accusations, personal demons, and declining health, including memory loss. Despite his flaws, he remains devoted to Miriam, who continues to visit him in a nursing home. The film received critical acclaim, with Paul Giamatti winning the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
