This is an ancient craft involving the shaping of metals through heating and forging, originating around 3000 BCE in regions such as Mesopotamia, Egypt, and India. Initially, blacksmiths worked with copper and bronze, later transitioning to iron and steel as metallurgy advanced. Blacksmithing involved heating metal to high temperatures and shaping it using hammers, anvils, and other tools, often followed by quenching in water or oil to harden the material. In ancient Rus', blacksmiths supplied farmers with plowshares, sickles, scythes, and warriors with swords, spears, arrows, and battle axes. Everything necessary for daily life—knives, needles, chisels, awls, planes, fishing hooks, locks, keys, and many other household items—was produced in blacksmith workshops. During the Middle Ages, blacksmiths formed guilds, passed down their knowledge through generations, and created not only utilitarian items but also works of art, such as decorative grilles, locks, and architectural elements. In Russia, blacksmithing developed from ancient times, especially in folk crafts. Russian blacksmiths were renowned for their skill, producing both utilitarian and artistic items. In the 19th century, with the spread of the Industrial Revolution, blacksmithing lost its significance as a mass craft but survived as an artistic and ethnographic practice, experiencing a revival in the 20th and 21st centuries due to renewed interest in manual labor, tradition reconstruction, and ornamental forging. Modern blacksmiths employ both traditional hand-forging techniques and modern tools, participate in festivals, exhibitions, and artistic projects, and teach the craft in specialized schools and workshops.
