A 1969 historical drama directed by Gillo Pontecorvo, set in the mid-19th century on the fictional Caribbean island of Queimada. British agent provocateur Sir William Walker (Marlon Brando) arrives on the island with the mission to incite a slave uprising against the Portuguese colonial government, aiming to open the island for economic exploitation by a British sugar company. Walker identifies the charismatic slave José Dolores (Evaristo Márquez) and persuades him to lead the rebellion. After successfully overthrowing the Portuguese, Walker installs a puppet government led by local aristocrat Teddy Sanchez (Renato Salvatori), expecting the new leadership to favor British interests. However, José Dolores, realizing that the freedom he fought for has not been achieved, continues to resist the new regime and British influence. Ten years later, Walker returns to the island to suppress Dolores's rebellion, now acting in the interests of the British government. The film delves into themes of colonialism, manipulation, and the struggle for true freedom, portraying the complex relationships between colonizers and the colonized.
