Captain Volkonogov Escaped

A 2021 Russian dramatic thriller directed by Natasha Merkulova and Aleksey Chupov. The film is set in the Soviet Union in 1938, during the height of the Great Terror. The protagonist, Captain Fyodor Volkonogov (Yuriy Borisov), is a dedicated officer of the NKVD, unquestioningly carrying out his orders. However, he soon realizes that he himself is about to become a target of the regime and decides to flee. During his escape, he experiences a mystical revelation: unless he receives forgiveness from at least one relative of his victims, his soul will be condemned to hell. Meanwhile, Major Goloshchyokin (Timofey Tribuntsev) is determined to track him down.
