The 1993 American crime film directed by Brian De Palma and written by David Koepp is based on the novels "Carlito's Way" (1975) and "After Hours" (1979) by Judge Edwin Torres. The film tells the story of Carlito Brigante (Al Pacino), a Puerto Rican criminal who, after serving five years of a thirty-year prison sentence, decides to abandon his criminal past and start anew. However, his old connections and circumstances force him back into the world of crime. Carlito invests money in a nightclub, hoping to save enough funds to move to the Bahamas with his lover Gail (Penelope Ann Miller), a dancer with whom he rekindles a relationship. However, his plans are complicated by his friend and lawyer Dave Kleinfeld (Sean Penn), who entangles Carlito in dangerous dealings with the mafia. Kleinfeld, a drug addict involved in dubious affairs, becomes the cause of many problems for Carlito. Additional characters, such as Benny Blanco (John Leguizamo), a young and ambitious criminal aiming to take Carlito's place, and Pachanga (Luis Guzmán), a former associate of Carlito, add tension to the plot. The film explores themes of betrayal, honor, and the impossibility of completely escaping one's past. Despite initially receiving mixed reviews from critics, "Carlito's Way" has since gained cult status and is considered one of De Palma's best works. Sean Penn and Penelope Ann Miller were nominated for Golden Globe Awards for their roles. The film's soundtrack was composed by Patrick Doyle and includes elements of salsa and merengue, reflecting the film's Latin American atmosphere.
