A 1986 Japanese animated adventure film created by Studio Ghibli and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The story takes place in an alternate world where steam-powered machines, airships, and floating islands exist. The plot follows a girl named Sheeta, who possesses a mysterious blue stone, and a boy named Pazu, who dreams of finding the legendary floating city of Laputa. Sheeta is captured by government agent Muska, who seeks to use her and her stone to locate Laputa, but she manages to escape. She meets Pazu, and together they embark on a perilous journey. They are pursued by both the military and a band of sky pirates led by Dola, who also wants to claim the stone. Traveling on airships and overcoming various challenges, the protagonists finally reach Laputa, which appears abandoned but is filled with incredible technology and robotic guardians. Muska reveals his true intentions—he seeks to harness Laputa’s power for military dominance. However, Sheeta and Pazu thwart his plans by reciting an ancient spell, triggering the city's collapse. They manage to escape, while Laputa ascends into the sky, leaving only ruins behind. The film was Studio Ghibli’s first production, received numerous awards, and had a significant impact on animation, becoming a cult classic that inspired many later works in the steampunk and adventure fantasy genres.
