City by the Sea

"City by the Sea" is a 2002 American crime drama directed by Michael Caton-Jones, based on the article "Mark of a Murderer" by Michael McAlary. The story centers on Vincent LaMarca (Robert De Niro), a seasoned New York City police detective whose life has long been haunted by the shameful legacy of his father, who was executed for the murder of a child. Determined to live a respectable and upright life, Vincent is blindsided when his estranged son Joey (James Franco), a troubled drug addict and father of a young boy, becomes the prime suspect in a murder linked to the drug trade. Struggling to maintain his distance and professionalism, Vincent faces mounting pressure as his personal and professional worlds collide.
