"City by the Sea" is a 2002 American crime drama directed by Michael Caton-Jones, based on the article "Mark of a Murderer" by Michael McAlary. The story centers on Vincent LaMarca (Robert De Niro), a seasoned New York City police detective whose life has long been haunted by the shameful legacy of his father, who was executed for the murder of a child. Determined to live a respectable and upright life, Vincent is blindsided when his estranged son Joey (James Franco), a troubled drug addict and father of a young boy, becomes the prime suspect in a murder linked to the drug trade. Struggling to maintain his distance and professionalism, Vincent faces mounting pressure as his personal and professional worlds collide. His girlfriend Michelle (Frances McDormand) learns of Joey’s existence, and Vincent is forced to confront the guilt of abandoning his son years ago. The plot thickens when Joey is implicated in the murder of Vincent’s partner, a crime actually committed by a drug dealer known as Spyder (William Forsythe). As Vincent investigates, he begins to see a chance for redemption—not just for himself, but for Joey and his grandson as well. The film is a poignant exploration of familial bonds, generational trauma, guilt, and the possibility of forgiveness, with a gritty portrayal of broken lives in a decaying seaside town.
