The 1999 American science fiction horror film directed by Renny Harlin centers on a group of scientists working in the isolated underwater laboratory "Aquatica," located in the Pacific Ocean. Their primary objective is to develop a cure for Alzheimer's disease using proteins extracted from the brains of mako sharks. To enhance the effectiveness of their experiments, the scientists, including Dr. Susan McCallister (Saffron Burrows) and Dr. Jim Whitlock (Stellan Skarsgård), genetically modify the sharks, increasing their brain size and, consequently, their intelligence. However, this leads to unforeseen consequences: the sharks become smarter, more aggressive, and begin attacking the research facility. Following an incident where one shark bites off Whitlock's arm, a series of catastrophic events ensue: a helicopter arriving for evacuation crashes, causing destruction and flooding the complex. Among the survivors are shark expert Carter Blake (Thomas Jane), cook Sherman "Preacher" Dudley (LL Cool J), engineer Tom Scoggins (Michael Rapaport), and project investor Russell Franklin (Samuel L. Jackson). As water levels rise and the sharks become increasingly deadly, the group strives to find a way to survive and prevent the predators from escaping into the open sea. The film combines intense scenes, unexpected plot twists, and horror elements, exploring themes of human hubris and the consequences of tampering with nature. Despite mixed critical reviews, the film grossed $165 million worldwide against a budget of $60–82 million and later achieved cult status among genre enthusiasts.
