The 1999 American science fiction horror film directed by John Bruno follows the story of the Russian research vessel "Akademik Vladislav Volkov," which, while in the South Pacific, communicates with the orbiting space station "Mir." Suddenly, a powerful energy surge from space strikes "Mir," killing the cosmonauts, and transmits itself to "Volkov," taking control of the ship and attacking the crew. Seven days later, the tugboat "Sea Star," captained by Robert Everton (Donald Sutherland), encounters a typhoon and loses its cargo. The crew, including navigator and former Navy officer Kelly Foster (Jamie Lee Curtis) and engineer Steve Baker (William Baldwin), discovers "Volkov" and decides to board it in hopes of salvage. Onboard, they find the electronics damaged and the crew missing. Soon, they confront a hostile extraterrestrial entity that uses technology and the bodies of the deceased to create cyborgs. The crew of "Sea Star" must fight for survival, combat mechanical monsters, and attempt to eliminate the threat before it reaches the mainland. The film explores themes of survival, human nature, and the dangers of uncontrolled technology.
