A 1970 American drama film directed by Bob Rafelson, "Five Easy Pieces" follows Bobby Dupea (Jack Nicholson), a gifted pianist from an affluent family who abandons his musical career to work on oil rigs in California. His girlfriend Rayette (Karen Black), a waitress aspiring to be a country singer, is pregnant, and his friend Elton (Billy Green Bush) is arrested. Upon learning from his sister Partita (Lois Smith) that their father has suffered a stroke, Bobby decides to visit his family in Washington, bringing Rayette along. During their journey, they pick up two hitchhikers, Terry and Palm, one of whom expresses anti-consumerist views. Upon arrival, Bobby hides Rayette in a motel, embarrassed by her in front of his aristocratic family. He meets Catherine Van Oost (Susan Anspach), his brother Carl's (Ralph Waite) fiancée, and they develop a mutual attraction. Bobby plays Chopin's Prelude for her but denies any emotional connection to the performance. After an intimate encounter, Catherine rejects him, stating he is incapable of love. Rayette's unexpected appearance at the family home creates tension, exacerbated by Bobby's conflict with his father's caregiver. Attempting to persuade Catherine to leave with him, he is refused. Following an emotional conversation with his father, Bobby departs with Rayette, but soon, at a gas station, he secretly hitches a ride on a northbound truck, leaving her behind. The film received four Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor, and was inducted into the U.S. National Film Registry in 2000 as culturally significant.
