This 2014 independent black comedy, directed by Irish filmmaker Lenny Abrahamson, follows aspiring musician Jon Burroughs (Domhnall Gleeson), who unexpectedly joins the avant-garde band Soronprfbs after their keyboardist is hospitalized. The band is led by the enigmatic and charismatic Frank (Michael Fassbender), who perpetually wears a large papier-mâché mask that conceals his face. Other band members include the aggressive and reserved Clara (Maggie Gyllenhaal), manager Don (Scoot McNairy), drummer Nana (Carla Azar), and guitarist Baraque (François Civil). The group retreats to a secluded cabin in Ireland to record a new album, where Jon strives to integrate into the band and contribute creatively, while documenting their process on social media. His efforts to popularize the band lead to an invitation to the South by Southwest festival in Texas, but attempts to make their music more commercially appealing result in internal conflicts and disagreements. Following a disastrous performance and Frank's disappearance, Jon locates him at his parents' home, sees him without the mask for the first time, and helps him reunite with his former bandmates. The film is inspired by the real-life story of musician and comedian Chris Sievey, known for his stage persona Frank Sidebottom, and explores themes of creativity, mental health, and the complexities of human relationships.
