Ghost in the Shell

A 2017 American cyberpunk action film directed by Rupert Sanders, it is the first live-action adaptation of the Japanese "Ghost in the Shell" franchise by Masamune Shirow. Set in the near future where the line between humans and robots is increasingly blurred, the protagonist, Major Motoko Kusanagi (Scarlett Johansson), is a cyborg supersoldier working in the elite Section 9 unit under the command of Daisuke Aramaki (Takeshi Kitano). After her human body was destroyed in a terrorist attack, her brain was transplanted into a fully artificial body, making her the perfect operative for combating cybercrime. Major and her team, including Batou (Pilou Asbæk) and Togusa (Chin Han), investigate a series of murders of high-ranking employees of the Hanka Robotics corporation. During the investigation, they encounter a mysterious hacker named Kuze (Michael Pitt), who aims to destroy the company's advancements in cybernetics. Major begins to experience visions that lead her to question the authenticity of her memories and the true nature of her identity. She discovers that she was deceived about her past and that her current "self" is the result of experiments by Hanka Robotics, aiming to create the perfect soldier. In the film's climax, Major embraces her human essence and decides to fight to preserve human nature in a world where technology seeks to suppress it. The film combines impressive visual effects with deep philosophical reflections on the nature of consciousness and identity.
