An American punk rock band from the East Bay of San Francisco, California, formed in 1987 by teenagers Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt under the name Sweet Children. They were soon joined by bassist Sean Hughes and drummer Raj Punjabi. In 1989, the band changed its name to Green Day and released their debut album "39/Smooth" on the independent label Lookout! Records. Their third album, "Dookie" (1994), released on major label Reprise Records, became a global breakthrough, selling over 10 million copies in the U.S. and over 20 million worldwide, thanks to hits like "Basket Case," "Longview," and "When I Come Around." In 2004, Green Day released the concept album "American Idiot," which won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album and was adapted into a successful Broadway musical. In 2015, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2024, they released their 14th studio album "Saviors," returning to political themes and pop-punk sound, receiving positive reviews from critics. Throughout their career, Green Day has sold over 75 million records worldwide and remains one of the most influential punk rock acts, combining energetic sound with social commentary.
