The 1979 American-British romantic war film, directed and written by Peter Hyams, follows Lieutenant David Halloran (Harrison Ford), a B-25 bomber pilot with the United States Eighth Air Force stationed in England during World War II. During a bombing raid on London, he meets British nurse Margaret Sellinger (Lesley-Anne Down), and they quickly fall into a passionate affair, despite Margaret being married to British intelligence officer Paul Sellinger (Christopher Plummer). Their relationship intensifies amidst the backdrop of war, and Halloran is soon assigned to a secret mission to transport an agent behind enemy lines in France. Unexpectedly, the agent turns out to be Margaret's husband, Paul. During the mission, their plane is shot down, and both men survive, finding themselves deep in enemy territory. Forced to work together, they navigate numerous obstacles, including German patrols and destroyed bridges, to reach safety. Throughout their journey, Halloran comes to realize that Paul is a noble man who genuinely loves his wife. Recognizing this, David decides to end his affair with Margaret, allowing her to return to her husband. The film delves into themes of love, duty, and sacrifice amidst the chaos of war, highlighting the complexities of human relationships under extreme circumstances.
