They Fought for Their Country

A 1975 war drama directed by Sergei Bondarchuk, based on the novel of the same name by Mikhail Sholokhov. The film takes place in the summer of 1942 during World War II, following Soviet soldiers retreating under the pressure of German forces. Despite exhaustion, they continue to fight for every inch of their homeland. Among them are privates Streltsov (Vasily Shukshin), Zvyagintsev (Sergei Bondarchuk), Lopakhin (Yuri Nikulin), and other soldiers whose fates intertwine on the battlefield.
