Hector and the Search for Happiness

The 2014 British-German-Canadian comedy-drama directed by Peter Chelsom, co-written with Tinker Lindsay and Maria von Heland, is based on François Lelord's novel of the same name. The film follows Hector (Simon Pegg), a quirky London psychiatrist who feels like a fraud for advising patients on happiness while lacking it himself. Seeking change, he embarks on a global journey to discover true happiness. In China, he meets businessman Edward (Stellan Skarsgård), who introduces him to Shanghai's nightlife, where Hector falls for a woman named Ying Li (Ming Zhao), but their connection is severed by her pimp. He then visits a mountain monastery, engaging with monks and contemplating life's meaning. In Africa, Hector reunites with his friend Michael (Barry Atsma) and his partner Marcel, and encounters drug lord Diego Baresco (Jean Reno), whose wife suffers from depression. Hector assists her with a new treatment, earning a pen engraved with Diego's name. Later, kidnapped by bandits, Hector proves his link to Diego using the pen and is released. In Los Angeles, he reconnects with former love Agnes (Toni Collette) and meets Professor Coreman (Christopher Plummer), who studies happiness scientifically. During an experiment, Hector realizes happiness encompasses all emotions, not just joy. A call from his girlfriend Clara (Rosamund Pike), with whom he had quarreled, makes him understand he can't be happy without her, prompting his return home to marry her.
