An American action thriller film from 1998, directed by Hong Kong filmmaker Tsui Hark. The story is set in Hong Kong on the eve of its handover to China. The protagonist, Marcus Ray (Jean-Claude Van Damme), is a fashion designer and businessman involved in the production of counterfeit brand-name sneakers. However, his life takes a drastic turn when he discovers that his business is being used to smuggle high-tech miniature bombs embedded in the shoes. Alongside his partner, Tommy Hendricks (Rob Schneider), who is secretly a CIA operative, Marcus is drawn into a deadly conspiracy involving international terrorists, the Chinese mafia, and U.S. intelligence agencies. As the plot unfolds, he learns that the weapons are intended for devastating attacks, forcing him to risk everything to prevent a catastrophe. The film is packed with intense fight sequences, explosive shootouts, high-speed chases, and unexpected twists, while Tsui Hark’s dynamic direction infuses it with the stylistic energy of Hong Kong action cinema blended with Hollywood spectacle.
