Red Rooms

The 2023 Canadian psychological thriller "Red Rooms" (Les chambres rouges), directed by Pascal Plante, follows a young woman named Kelly-Anne (Juliette Gariépy) who becomes obsessed with the trial of serial killer Ludovic Chevalier. Chevalier is accused of broadcasting the murders of three teenagers in "red rooms"—dark web chat rooms where users pay to watch snuff films. Despite the discovery of the victims' bodies in his backyard, some fans believe he is innocent due to his meek demeanor. Kelly-Anne befriends another of Chevalier's fans, Clementine (Laurie Babin), who has come to attend the trial and is living in a shelter. Kelly-Anne invites her to stay at her place but remains reserved in their interactions. She earns her living through online gambling and is skilled in computer technology, having created her own AI named Guinevere. Secretly, Kelly-Anne begins cyber-stalking Francine Beaulieu, the mother of one of the victims, whose snuff video has never been found. The film delves into themes of obsession, morality, and the dark facets of human nature within the context of modern digital society.
