A 2006 war drama film produced by Luxembourg and the United States, directed by Werner Herzog, is based on the true story of German-American pilot Dieter Dengler (Christian Bale), who, during the Vietnam War in February 1966, was on a combat mission with squadron VA-145 from the aircraft carrier USS Ranger. His Douglas A-1 Skyraider was shot down over Laos; he survived the crash but was captured by Pathet Lao fighters. Offered leniency in exchange for signing a document condemning U.S. actions, he refused and was subjected to torture before being sent to a prisoner of war camp. There, he met fellow captives: American pilots Gene DeBruin (Jeremy Davies) and Duane W. Martin (Steve Zahn), Hong Kong radio operator Y.C. To, Thai Air America employee Phisit Intharathat, and Procet. Dengler immediately began planning an escape but faced skepticism from the others, who were suffering from malnutrition, unsanitary conditions, and abuse by the guards. After several months, as food supplies dwindled and it became known that the guards planned to kill the prisoners and return to their villages, the captives decided to execute their escape plan. However, due to a lack of coordination, the plan went awry, resulting in most of the guards being killed. The prisoners split into groups and fled into the jungle. Dengler and Martin attempted to reach the Mekong River to cross into Thailand but encountered rapids and a waterfall. Martin grew increasingly weak, and after a failed attempt to signal an American helicopter with a fire, they stumbled upon a small village where enraged villagers beheaded Martin. Dengler managed to escape and hid in the jungle, evading pursuit. Several days later, he was finally rescued by an American helicopter and taken to a hospital at a U.S. compound, where he was isolated due to the classified nature of his mission. Eventually, his squadron members arranged for his return to the ship, where the entire crew welcomed him as a hero.
