A 2015 American comedy directed by Barry Levinson, starring Bill Murray, Kate Hudson, Bruce Willis, Zooey Deschanel, and Leem Lubany. The story follows Richie Lanz (Bill Murray), a down-on-his-luck music manager from Los Angeles who is struggling to stay afloat in the entertainment industry. His only client, aspiring singer Ronnie (Zooey Deschanel), grows weary of the lack of opportunities and decides to leave him. In a desperate attempt to turn things around, Richie convinces Ronnie to join him on a USO tour in Afghanistan to perform for American troops. However, upon arriving in Kabul, Ronnie abandons him, leaving Richie without money or identification. Seeking a way out of his predicament, he encounters Merci (Kate Hudson), an American woman working as a dancer in a local club, and Nick (Danny McBride) and Jake (Scott Caan), two opportunistic arms dealers. They introduce him to "Bombay" Brian (Bruce Willis), a former military operative turned mercenary, who agrees to accompany Richie on his travels through the dangerous regions of the country. During one of their excursions, Richie accidentally discovers Salima (Leem Lubany), a young Afghan girl with an extraordinary voice. Salima dreams of participating in the local music competition "Afghan Star," akin to "American Idol," but faces strong opposition from her conservative family and society, who deem women's participation in such shows unacceptable. Seeing an opportunity for redemption, Richie decides to become her manager despite numerous obstacles and dangers. He persuades the show's producer, Daoud (Beejan Land), to give Salima a chance to perform on stage. As events unfold, Richie and his new friends confront cultural barriers, threats from radical groups, and personal challenges. The film explores themes of cultural differences, female empowerment, and the pursuit of second chances in life, blending comedic elements with dramatic moments.
