Social work

This is a professional and humanitarian activity aimed at assisting individuals, families, and communities to improve their quality of life, protect their rights, support them during crises, and promote social justice. The practice of social work originated in the late 19th century in the United Kingdom and the United States amidst industrialization, urbanization, and increasing poverty. Early structured forms of social support included the settlement house movement and charity organizations, involving both volunteers and professionals. Over time, the practice gained academic and educational foundations, with the first formal training programs for social workers emerging in the early 20th century, establishing it as a recognized profession. Social work encompasses a wide range of areas, including child and youth welfare, elderly care, disability support, protection from violence, and guidance during migration and crisis situations. It is actively developed within government services, NGOs, international organizations, and educational institutions. A key feature of the practice is the combination of ethical principles, interdisciplinary knowledge (psychology, sociology, law, pedagogy), and practical skills. In today’s world, social work plays a crucial role in addressing inequality, discrimination, social isolation, and poverty, as well as in advancing human rights and inclusive approaches within society.
