A 2008 American action thriller directed by David Ayer. The film follows Los Angeles Police Department detective Tom Ludlow (Keanu Reeves), who, grappling with his wife's death, turns to alcohol and works undercover in an elite vice unit. At the film's outset, Ludlow orchestrates a sting operation with Korean gangsters to rescue two kidnapped girls, resulting in him killing all the criminals and tampering with evidence to justify his actions. His former partner, Detective Terrence Washington (Terry Crews), disillusioned with the department's corruption, begins collaborating with Captain James Biggs (Hugh Laurie) from Internal Affairs, raising Ludlow's suspicions. When Ludlow decides to shadow Washington, he witnesses his murder during a convenience store shootout and becomes the prime suspect. Determined to clear his name, Ludlow teams up with Detective Paul "Disco" Diskant (Chris Evans) to investigate the killing. Their inquiry exposes a network of corrupt officers, including Sergeant Mike Clady (Jay Mohr) and Detective Dante Demille (John Corbett), as well as criminals like "Grill" (The Game) and "Fremont" (Cle Shaheed Sloan). Ludlow uncovers that his boss and mentor, Captain Jack Wander (Forest Whitaker), is at the center of the corruption. In the film's climax, Ludlow confronts Wander, who confesses to his crimes but attempts to justify them as protecting his officers. Ludlow kills Wander in a shootout, after which Captain Biggs offers him a chance at redemption, implying an opportunity to reform the system from within. The film delves into themes of corruption, morality, and redemption within law enforcement, highlighting the complexities of loyalty versus justice.
