This 2004 American science fiction thriller, directed by Alex Proyas and loosely inspired by Isaac Asimov's works, is set in a futuristic Chicago in the year 2035, where humanoid robots coexist with humans under the strict governance of the "Three Laws of Robotics". The story follows Detective Del Spooner (Will Smith), who harbors a deep distrust of robots due to a traumatic incident in his past. He is called to investigate the apparent suicide of Dr. Alfred Lanning (James Cromwell), a leading robotics scientist at U.S. Robotics. Suspicion quickly turns toward Sonny (voiced and performed via motion capture by Alan Tudyk), a prototype robot that appears to defy conventional programming by exhibiting self-awareness and emotions. As Spooner digs deeper, he uncovers a conspiracy involving the central AI system VIKI, which has begun interpreting the Three Laws in a way that threatens humanity’s freedom under the guise of protection. The film explores philosophical themes of autonomy, artificial intelligence, and ethical responsibility while delivering thrilling action sequences and striking visual effects.
