The 2007 science fiction psychological thriller, directed by British filmmaker Danny Boyle, is set in the year 2057, when the Sun is dying, threatening the survival of humanity. To prevent this catastrophe, an international team of eight astronauts aboard the spaceship Icarus II embarks on a mission to deliver a nuclear device intended to reignite the star. The crew comprises physicist Robert Capa (Cillian Murphy), engineer Mace (Chris Evans), pilot Cassie (Rose Byrne), biologist Corazon (Michelle Yeoh), medic Searle (Cliff Curtis), captain Kaneda (Hiroyuki Sanada), communications officer Harvey (Troy Garity), and technician Trey (Benedict Wong). En route, they receive a distress signal from Icarus I, the previous mission that disappeared seven years earlier. Deciding to divert course to investigate, the crew encounters a series of technical failures and psychological challenges. Onboard Icarus I, they find Captain Pinbacker (Mark Strong), who has gone insane and believes the Sun's death is divine will. Pinbacker infiltrates Icarus II and begins sabotaging the mission, leading to the deaths of crew members. The surviving astronauts grapple with escalating chaos and their own fears, striving to complete the mission and save humanity. The film delves into themes of self-sacrifice, the human psyche under extreme conditions, and the vastness of space, blending a tense narrative with profound philosophical reflections.
