The 1994 American satirical black comedy film, written and directed by George Huang, follows the story of Guy (Frank Whaley), an ambitious recent film school graduate who lands a job as an assistant to powerful yet tyrannical Hollywood producer Buddy Ackerman (Kevin Spacey). Despite warnings from Buddy's previous assistant Rex (Benicio del Toro), Guy is eager to make his mark in the film industry. However, Buddy turns out to be an abusive boss, subjecting Guy to relentless verbal assaults and demeaning tasks. Guy finds solace in a romantic relationship with producer Dawn Lockard (Michelle Forbes). When Guy discovers a possible affair between Dawn and Buddy and is subsequently fired, he snaps: he invades Buddy's home, takes him hostage, and inflicts both physical and psychological torment. During their confrontation, Buddy reveals his own tragic past and justifies his harsh treatment as a means to toughen Guy for the brutal world of show business. The film's climax challenges the audience to ponder the morality and cost of success in the entertainment industry.
