American rapper, singer, songwriter, and actor, born November 8, 1971, in Kansas City, Missouri. Known by his stage name Tech N9ne, given by rapper Black Walt due to his fast-paced "chopper" style reminiscent of the TEC-9 semi-automatic handgun; Yates later attributed a deeper meaning, interpreting "Tech" as "technique" and "Nine" as the number of completion. In 1999, he co-founded the independent label Strange Music with business partner Travis O'Guin, which became one of the most successful in the hip-hop industry. Tech N9ne has released over 25 studio albums, including "Anghellic" (2001), "Killer" (2008), "Special Effects" (2015), "Bliss" (2023), and "5816 Forest" (2025), as well as the "Collabos" series featuring various artists. His music blends hip-hop, rap rock, horrorcore, and the "chopper" style characterized by rapid-fire delivery. He has collaborated with artists like Eminem, The Doors, Corey Taylor, B.o.B, and 2 Chainz; his track "Hood Go Crazy" achieved platinum status and peaked at number 90 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2009, he received the Left Field Woodie award from mtvU. His music has been featured in films, television shows, and video games, and he actively supports Kansas City culture, releasing tracks like "Red Kingdom" in support of the Kansas City Chiefs football team. Tech N9ne continues to tour extensively and release new music, remaining an influential figure in independent hip-hop.
