The Banshees of Inisherin

An Irish black tragicomedy film released in 2022, directed and written by Martin McDonagh. Set in 1923 on the fictional island of Inisherin off the west coast of Ireland, the plot centers on two longtime friends: Pádraic Súilleabháin (Colin Farrell) and Colm Doherty (Brendan Gleeson). Unexpectedly, Colm decides to end their friendship, leading to escalating conflict between them. Pádraic, bewildered by Colm's decision, attempts to mend their relationship, but Colm remains steadfast, expressing a desire to devote his remaining time to composing music. The situation intensifies when Colm issues an ultimatum: for each attempt Pádraic makes to reconcile, he will cut off one of his own fingers. Amidst this turmoil, the lives of other island residents unfold: Pádraic's sister, Siobhán Súilleabháin (Kerry Condon), who yearns for a better life, and young Dominic Kearney (Barry Keoghan), who is searching for his place in the world. The film explores themes of loneliness, misunderstanding, and human relationships against the backdrop of the Irish Civil War. It premiered on September 5, 2022, at the 79th Venice International Film Festival, where it received critical acclaim, and Colin Farrell was awarded the Volpi Cup for Best Actor.
