A 1957 war drama directed by David Lean, based on the novel of the same name by Pierre Boulle. Set during World War II in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp in Southeast Asia, the film follows British Colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness), who, adhering to military honor, agrees to oversee the construction of a strategically crucial bridge over the River Kwai, unaware that he is aiding the enemy. Meanwhile, Allied command dispatches a sabotage team, led by Major Shears (William Holden), to destroy the bridge. The film explores themes of honor, duty, and the futility of war, becoming one of cinema’s greatest achievements and winning seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
