An American open-world action role-playing video game developed and published by Bethesda Softworks on March 25, 1994, for the MS-DOS platform. It is the first installment in The Elder Scrolls series, set on the continent of Tamriel. The player assumes the role of the Eternal Champion, tasked with rescuing Emperor Uriel Septim VII, who has been imprisoned in another dimension by the treacherous Imperial Battlemage Jagar Tharn. To achieve this, the player must collect eight pieces of the legendary Staff of Chaos, scattered across various regions of Tamriel. The game features a vast procedurally generated world with over 15,000 cities, towns, and dungeons, as well as a dynamic day-night cycle. The character creation system allows players to choose from multiple races and classes, customizing attributes and skills. Combat mechanics utilize mouse movements to determine attack direction and type. Additionally, the game includes a spell creation system that enables players to combine various magical effects. Despite the technical limitations of its time, Arena received positive reviews for its scale and freedom, laying the foundation for future titles in the series. In 2004, to commemorate the series' tenth anniversary, the game was released as a free download on Bethesda's official website.
